- Come to the Coalfields -
Volunteer through Mountain Justice

Work for a grassroots group fighting for social and environmental justice in Appalachia - it's easy!

  • We need help testing streams and other water sources to identify problem areas. Many of our streams are as acidic as lemon juice and run bright green from the mine run off. Moreover, many sources of drinking water have been contaminated by irresponsible waste disposal practices. We wish to test as many streams as possible this year.
  • We need help going door to door doing listening projects in communities next to these mines.
  • We need photographers and writers to come and document the damage being done and to spread the word. Silence and ignorance are these greedy corporate carpetbagging coal companies greatest weapon.
  • We need artists to help us make signs and props for rallies and demonstrations which we will keep and use for years. T-shirts, posters, and other designs are always needed!
  • We need cooks, gardners, medics, trainers, and a whole host of other people/skills for this work.
  • We need musicians to learn and create and sing songs of our mountains and the annihilation of entire communities and watersheds.
  • We need scouts with trucks to travel gravel back roads to ID mines and permit sites - we need help. Cooks, geologist, map makers, artist, musicians, drivers — we need you and your help for this campaign.
  • We must show America and the world this is a crime of geologic proportions, and that begins with you! Take the time to fill out our quick and fun volunteer application to find the best way for you to help.

Offer Help to a Grassroots Organization!

Each state in the coal mining regions of Southern Appalachia is home to a number of small grassroots-level non-profit organizations that often can use volunteer assistance. The needs of these groups are diverse, ranging from water-testing to community organizing to grantwriting, and everywhere in between. Click on a state below for more information about specific groups. If you are unsure where you would best fit, Mountain Justice has created a volunteer coordination model aimed at recruiting and matching potential volunteers, according to their desires and skill sets, with work suitable to them and to the needs of a given grassroots group.
